Shaping music in performance

Shaping music in performance - sound experiment 1

We are researching the ways in which listeners of all levels of musical experience, from complete novice to professional musician, use the idea of 'shape' when listening to music (or don't use it, as the case may be). We are hoping to study this in a variety of ways over the next couple of years, but we would like to gain an initial idea of listeners' views through a sound experiment, and would be extremely grateful if you could take part in it. All your responses will be kept absolutely confidential and will be made anonymous as part of the data collection process.

This initial experiment is designed to find out how listeners perceive shape in sounds. You will be asked to represent sound visually by means of a pen and graphics tablet, as well as fill in a couple of questionnaires. The study is based in the Music Department, King's College London, Strand, London WC2R 2LS, and will take about 45 minutes to complete. A small financial compensation will be provided.

If you are interested or would like any further information, please contact Mats Küssner at mats.kussner@kcl.ac.uk.

Shaping music in performance - interview study

We are currently recruiting professional harpsichord players to take part in a small-scale interview study. The interviews will take place at the Strand campus, King's College, London, and are expected to take 60 to 90 minutes. A small financial compensation will be provided. Existing participants have described the experience as 'great fun' and 'really interesting'. If you would be interested in taking part, please contact Helen Prior at helen.prior@kcl.ac.uk.
